Maybank Group, Malaysia's largest financial institution, has announced the relocation of its headquarters into Merdeka 118 (Merdeka One One Eight), the world's second-tallest building, and has renamed it Merdeka Maybank. The group will occupy a total of 33 floors. Meanwhile, its former headquarters has been given a new name but will continue operating normally for customers.
According to reports, on 28 July 2026, Maybank Group (Malayan Banking Berhad, or Maybank), Malaysia's largest financial institution, announced the renaming of Menara Merdeka 118 to Menara Merdeka Maybank, in order to reflect the banking group's presence in this landmark building, which now serves as the group's headquarters. The bank's newly registered headquarters address is on the 70th floor of the building.
Maybank's former headquarters building on Jalan Tun Perak, previously known as Menara Maybank, will be renamed Menara Tun Perak. The bank's main Kuala Lumpur branch will continue to operate at Menara Tun Perak until further notice. Customers with accounts at this branch will not be affected, and all banking services will continue as normal.
Earlier, on 6 May 2026, Maybank Group officially announced its move to the building, occupying a total of 33 floors to accommodate approximately 7,000 employees, with dedicated entrances for the convenience of staff, customers, and visitors. In addition, certain subsidiaries of Maybank Group — including Maybank Islamic Berhad and Maybank Investment Bank Berhad — will also relocate their headquarters to the new building, moving in one at a time on a phased basis.
Merdeka Maybank has been the tallest building in Southeast Asia since 2021 and is the second-tallest in the world, surpassed only by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Standing 118 storeys and 678.9 metres (2,227 feet) tall, it is a new landmark of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Construction began in July 2014 and was completed in November 2023, with the building opening on 10 January 2024. The building's name derives from the word "Merdeka," meaning "independence," and its form is inspired by the pose of Tunku Abdul Rahman, leader of the Federation of Malaya, as he raised his fist to proclaim independence from the United Kingdom on 31 August 1957.
The building was developed by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), a Malaysian government-linked investment corporation. It sits on a 7.7-hectare (19-acre) plot on Jalan Hang Jebat, on the site of the former Merdeka Stadium grounds. The building houses the Maybank Group headquarters, the Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur hotel with 252 rooms, and an adjoining seven-storey retail complex called 118 Mall, which features SOGO118 department store, Village Grocer supermarket, Makanizm Food Hall, and the Malaysian Artisan District (MAD) gallery, set to open in the third quarter of 2026.
To reach Merdeka Maybank, visitors can take the MRT Kajang Line to Merdeka Station, Exit D, or the LRT Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line to Plaza Rakyat Station. Alternatively, the KL Monorail stops at Maharajalela Station, Exit B, from which the building is approximately a 400-metre walk through Merdeka Stadium.
