Chiang Mai — Thai and Chinese in an all-out brawl! A Chinese tourist family out sightseeing at Tha Phae bumped shoulders with a Thai national while walking in opposite directions. Neither side was satisfied, and punches were thrown until a clip of the incident went viral. The latest update is that Chiang Mai police have called all parties in to clear the matter, confirming that justice will be served to every side based on the evidence at hand.
A clip circulating on social media showed a confrontation in which Chinese tourists and Thai nationals exchanged words and came to blows on the footpath in the Tha Phae Road area. The incident occurred after a group of Chinese tourists — a family of several members — were walking toward a Thai national and a collision occurred, escalating into a fight on 1 August 2026. News reports indicate that tourist police officers from the Investigation Unit, Sub-division 2, Tourist Police Division 2, together with investigators from Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, reviewed CCTV footage and tracked down those involved. It was found that the incident took place on 1 August 2026 at approximately 12:00 noon. A family group of nine Chinese tourists, including children and elderly members, were walking in the opposite direction to the Thai counterpart when a collision and ensuing argument occurred, leading to pushing and physical assault. Other members of the tourist family stepped in to intervene until the situation subsided, after which both sides went their separate ways.
The Thai party subsequently filed a complaint with investigators at Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station. Tourist police officers then tracked down the Chinese tourist family appearing in the clip to gather the facts. The tourists stated that they had also sustained injuries during the incident but did not wish to press charges against the other party. They also said they had been unaware that the incident had been filmed and shared on social media until officers contacted them, and they cooperated fully in providing information.
Regarding a point raised on social media questioning the immigration status of the Chinese tourists, officers conducted checks and found that the tourists in question were staying in the Kingdom of Thailand legally and with proper authorization. Police officers confirmed that they would proceed to gather evidence comprehensively and take statements from all parties involved, in order to deliver justice through the proper legal process.
In addition, the Tourist Police and Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station stated that the incident was a personal altercation between individuals and had no impact on the overall safety situation of Chiang Mai Province, which remains a safe tourist destination ready to welcome visitors from around the world. They also called on the public to be gracious and warm-hearted hosts, and to help create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in order to strengthen the impression and confidence of tourists visiting Chiang Mai.
