MGR Online — Myanmar media, particularly outlets in Karen State, are running the story prominently: Thai authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung, Commander of Military Zone 2 of the Karen Border Guard Force (BGF), on charges of transnational human trafficking.
Today (29 Jul 2026), media in Myanmar, especially those based in Karen State, reported that Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung, Commander of Military Zone 2 of the Karen State Border Guard Force (BGF), has been issued an arrest warrant by Thai authorities on charges of transnational human trafficking.
According to a report by Karen News, citing a document made public on the morning of 28 July 2026, Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung, 50 years old, a Myanmar national, has had an arrest warrant issued against him to bring him before Thai legal proceedings, based on credible evidence that he committed the offence of trafficking people across the border into Thailand illegally.
Karen News also cited an interview with a source close to the Border Guard Force in Myawaddy, who said they learned of the arrest warrant against Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung on the morning of 29 July 2026.
The Karen Information Center confirmed that the arrest warrant for Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung had already been delivered to the Karen State Border Guard Force.
However, the reports presented by Myanmar media did not provide details on which unit within the Royal Thai Police issued the arrest warrant for Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung on this occasion.
Military Zone 2 of the Karen State Border Guard Force, which Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung commands, is primarily responsible for the Myawaddy area.
Karen News noted that although Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung has not yet been placed on any international human rights sanctions blacklist, there were reports that in 2025, Thailand's Department of Special Investigation (DSI) was conducting an investigation with a view to prosecuting three senior leaders of the Karen State Border Guard Force: Colonel Saw Chit Tu, Commander of the Karen National Army (KNA) overseeing the Shwe Kokko New City area; Brigadier General Saw Teng Win, Deputy Commander of the Karen State Border Guard Force; and Brigadier General Saw Mo Thaung — all on charges of human trafficking.
Thai authorities believe that all three played significant roles in and benefited from allowing grey-zone Chinese scammers to use the Myawaddy area to commit online fraud crimes, causing enormous damage to people in multiple countries amounting to an immense financial toll.
