How Big Is China Mobile, and Why Does TRUE Have to Care?

Reports that China Mobile may be considering selling some of its TRUE shares have brought renewed market attention to the relationship between the Chinese telecommunications giant and Thailand's largest telecom company.

China Mobile International Holdings holds a 7.81% stake in TRUE, valued at approximately 36–39 billion baht. Yet the significance of this Chinese firm goes well beyond its shareholding percentage, because its parent company, China Mobile, is China's national telecommunications giant and one of the telecom service providers with the largest customer bases in the world.

China Mobile's services cover all 31 of China's provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government, as well as Hong Kong. It has more than 1 billion mobile subscribers, more than 620 million 5G customers, and more than 320 million broadband internet customers.

China Mobile also employs approximately 450,000 people, and its business spans mobile networks, home internet, cloud services, data centres, IoT, and digital systems for large enterprises. It is therefore not merely a mobile carrier but one of the pillars of China's digital infrastructure.

With a network and customer base of that scale — numbering in the billions — China Mobile possesses capital, technology, 5G and cloud expertise, and global procurement leverage in telecommunications equipment. Its entry as a shareholder of TRUE therefore carries weight as a strategic partner capable of connecting TRUE to Chinese technology, equipment manufacturers, enterprise customers, and China's broader digital ecosystem.

TRUE itself has stated that having China Mobile — alongside the CP Group and Telenor — as a strategic shareholder helps the company access new technology and innovation, as well as generate benefits of scale in procurement and operations.

China Mobile also plays an important role in facilitating business connectivity between Thailand and China, particularly in serving Chinese companies investing in Thailand and Thai businesses seeking to connect their networks and digital services to the Chinese market. Its value therefore goes beyond that of an investor simply holding shares to collect dividends or capital gains.

The reports that China Mobile may sell some of its TRUE shares have consequently attracted considerable attention, because the market is watching not only for selling pressure on the stock but also for what any such move would mean for the strategic relationship between the two companies. Nevertheless, TRUE has confirmed that China Mobile has no intention of selling its entire stake and still wishes to remain a long-term shareholder.

China Mobile is therefore not merely a 7.81% shareholder of TRUE, but a partner from China's national telecommunications giant — one with a customer base in the billions and the potential to support TRUE in technology, network capability, procurement, and the bridging of Thai and Chinese business.
