Thais continue to have reason for hope — the Director-General of the Fine Arts Department reveals that in 2027, "Chiang Mai City" will enter the agenda for World Heritage consideration.
A news program reported that Mr. Phanombutr Chandracho, Director-General of the Fine Arts Department, stated that following Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province's proclamation of Thailand's glory on the world stage as the country's sixth cultural World Heritage Site, it is believed that both Thai and foreign visitors will flock to the site in large numbers, which will certainly bring significant economic benefits. Nevertheless, the Fine Arts Department will continue its role in maintaining and restoring Wat Phra Mahathat, in collaboration with Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, by implementing conservation measures in accordance with UNESCO's criteria — including the construction of new commercial buildings — all of which must not diminish the value of Wat Phra Mahathat.
The Director-General of the Fine Arts Department further stated that this marks three consecutive years in which Thailand has gained a World Heritage Site, and he expressed hope that there will be similarly good news in 2027. Under the planned timeline, Chiang Mai City — which has been inscribed on UNESCO's Tentative List since 2015 — will be put forward for consideration, and there are also several other sites that have already been placed on the Tentative List.
